It just mixes that group of students with the New(-er) Mutants (the one with Surge, Prodigy, etc.), it's not "essential" but it's pretty similar in spirit to the (not so) New Mutants (the one with Dani Moonstar, Warlock, etc.) and Generation X (the Lobdell one) so it's worth reading, I think. X-men tas ran from 1992 to 1997. Spider-Man tas ran from 1994 to 1998. The alien costume trilogy was aired in 1995 then months later we get the mutant agenda episode in 1995 as well. In 1997 Spider-Man secret wars battle world we had storm appeared with no new haircut and memory erased from the sw event ended. Just watched the X-Men (2000) for the first time.... I'm surprised by how good it was! While it's not completely comic accurate, it has a very tight plot and good production value. The practical effects for Magneto's powers looked really nice and added to the realism. Finally, all the acting is strong especially from Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellan.The DoX books since were more hit or miss.
