Always pull out your people from the house because else the mobs will attack the building if your people are in it.You don't need to enclose your entire base with walls, just an area, with an open gate, where you will move your survivors to when you get attacked. And you need to move ALL of your survivors there if you want them to come to you through the open gate. As far as dealing with the ranged mobs, kill them first. I tried missiles but they were destroying my own walls. With all 4 armed survivors on towers or platforms it is easy base defense, I say 4 because I have yet to recruit a 5th.
